The Elizabeth Lookout (Erzsébet-kilátó) located on János Hill is temporarily closed due to renovation works. Although the tower building is currently not accessible, the highest point of the Buda Hills and its surroundings still offer great excursion opportunities for nature lovers.

Alternative Hiking Destinations on János Hill During the Closure

Although you cannot enter the Elizabeth Lookout building or access its upper observation deck at present, the surrounding infrastructure and forest walking trails remain fully accessible.

1. Normafa and Anna-rét: Playground, Chapel, and the Famous Strudel

Located in the immediate vicinity of János Hill, Normafa and Anna-rét are among the most beloved excursion spots for locals. They can be reached via a comfortable forest walk from the Normafa or Virágvölgy stops of the Children’s Railway.

  • Anna-rét Chapel and Forest Playground: Anna-rét is known not only for its spacious meadow ideal for relaxing and picnicking, but also for its renovated forest chapel and modern, nature-inspired children’s playground right next to Virágvölgy station.

  • Normafa Visitor Center and Strudel: The area around the Normafa Ski Lodge serves as a perfect starting point. Strolling along the panoramic walkway, you can sample the legendary Normafa strudel and lángos while enjoying stunning views of the city.

2. Hárs Hill Lookouts: Makovecz Imre Lookout and Kaán Károly Lookout

If you are looking for an observation tower experience, the neighboring Hárs Hill provides a perfect alternative! Starting from the Szépjuhászné or Hárshegy stations of the Children’s Railway, you can conquer two uniquely constructed towers:

  • Makovecz Imre Lookout (Kis-Hárs Hill): Designed by Imre Makovecz, this uniquely structured wooden tower with a spiral staircase offers a distinctive view of Hűvösvölgy, Buda Castle Hill, and downtown Budapest.

  • Kaán Károly Lookout (Nagy-Hárs Hill): Standing on the summit of Nagy-Hárs Hill, this rectangular stone and timber lookout tower rewards visitors with a full panoramic view of the Buda Hills.

3. Fairy Rock (Tündér-szikla) and the Chairlift Surroundings

Rising on the eastern slope of János Hill, Fairy Rock (Tündér-szikla) is a must-see stop for hikers, featuring unique rock formations and a natural balcony overlooking Budapest.

The upper station of the Zugliget Chairlift (Zugligeti Libegő) is also located nearby and remains fully operational, allowing you to combine your hike with a scenic ride.

4. The Panorama Curve: Peerless Views from the Train Window

For railway enthusiasts, the Children’s Railway’s very own Panorama Curve (Panoráma-ív) is an essential experience.

On the section between Szépjuhászné and Hárshegy stations, the train winds along the steep slopes of Nagy-Hárs Hill.
